The statue of Sándor Petőfi, the greatest and most important Hungarian poet, was unveiled on 22 September 2017 in a small park on Senný trh (Hay Market) Square next to Petőfi Street in Komárno.
The work was created by the Csongrád sculptor couple Györgyi Lantos and István Máté. In the 1841–1842 school year the poet was a student of the 7th (logic) class in Pápa, where he became close friends with Mór Jókai and Soma Orlai Petrich. In 1842, at the end of the school year, he set off to his parents with Orlai, but first they spent a week visiting Jókai in Komárno. It was here that the poem “A Dunán” (“On the Danube”) was written.
